The perception of policing as marking its own homework with regards to professional standards and misconduct is damaging. We recommend influential independent scrutiny of these processes.

The IOPC already publish their recommendations and forces (or local policing bodies or others to whom recommendations are made) are required by law to publish their responses and actions taken in response. Local policing bodies, such as PCCs or those exercising PCC functions are already required to hold their local forces to account and operate independently of the government.
