We endorse the Health and Social Care Committee’s call for additional resources to be directed...

Conclusion
We endorse the Health and Social Care Committee’s call for additional resources to be directed to social care. That Committee has made the case for an increase of £7 billion a year by 2023/4. We note that despite the Government’s recent announcement the level of new investment in social care from 2023/24 remains unclear.

HM Government Acknowledged
The government partially accepts this recommendation. Recommendation 295 is about endorsing the Health and Social Care Committee’s call for additional resources to be directed to social care and notes that despite the government’s recent announcement the level of new investment in social care from 2023/24 remains unclear. In September 2021, the Prime Minister announced the ‘Build Back Better’ plan for health and social care. This included significant additional investment in social care, including £5.4 billion over the next three years to begin major reforms to the way social care is delivered. This funding will enable local authorities to improve the quality and accessibility of care, support the workforce, and promote innovation. The government is committed to ensuring that social care has the resources it needs to deliver high-quality care and support to everyone who needs it. DHSC will continue to work closely with local authorities and other stakeholders to ensure that the additional funding is used effectively to deliver the best possible outcomes for people who draw on care and support. As part of the ‘Build Back Better’ plan the government has also committed to providing a further £1.7 billion to improve the adult social care charging system. This will ensure that more people are able to access the care they need, without having to sell their homes or face catastrophic costs. The government will be setting out more details about these reforms in due course.
