10th ANNIVERSARY OF MORECAMBE BAY COCKLE PICKER TRAGEDY
That this House commemorates the 10th anniversary of the death of 23 Chinese cockle pickers at Morecambe Bay; recognises that their death was a dominant factor in the creation of the Gangmasters Licensing Authority; but is disappointed that the opportunity to extend the remit of the Authority into other sectors has to date been rejected.
MORECAMBE BAY COCKLE PICKERS
That this House remembers the 23 Chinese cockle pickers who lost thier lives on the shores of Morecambe Bay on the first anniversary of their death on 6th February 2005; and welcomes the Gangmasters Act 2004 which will go some way towards protecting future workers from similar unnecessary tragedies and will stand as a fitting testimony to them and their families.
