We investigated the contact Sussex Police had with a woman and a man before he went on to kill her in August 2016. The man was later found guilty of the woman’s murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. Our investigation found that the woman had reported to Sussex Police that the man was stalking her in February 2016. The man was given words of advice over his behaviour. In March 2016 Sussex Police received a report that the man had allegedly assaulted the woman. When it was revealed that the woman had been in a relationship with the man after initially denying it, an officer warned her about wasting police time. Over the following months, she reported further incidents regarding the man, included him stealing her house key and entering her bedroom. Sussex Police never arrested the man on suspicion of stalking. During the investigation, we found indications of possible …
