The Government is committed to strengthening cooperation with the EU and its Member States on shared challenges, including irregular migration and serious and organised crime, and upholding the security of the UK and Europe. The UK-EU Strategic Partnership, agreed at the UK-EU Summit in May 2025, provides a framework for regular and structured engagement in this area. Through the Common Understanding, the UK and EU agreed to enhance cooperation to tackle irregular migration, including through the establishment of a dedicated Common Understanding on Illegal Migration. This agreement covers a range of measures, including enhanced operational cooperation, tackling migrant smuggling, and readmission of illegal migrants. This Government is working closely with the EU and its Member States to put these commitments into effect. In particular, the Government has been at the forefront of efforts to tackle irregular migration across Europe, including through its leadership of Operation Vector, a multi-national effort that has led to a significant increase in arrests and disruptions of organised crime groups. The UK has also been instrumental in the establishment of the UK-Albania Taskforce on Illegal Migration, which has seen a significant reduction in illegal crossings from Albania to the UK. The UK also continues to work closely with EU Member States, including France, to disrupt organised crime groups and prevent illegal crossings across the Channel. On law enforcement, the Government continues to work closely with the EU and its Member States through the mechanisms established under Part 3 of the TCA, which provides for broad and robust cooperation on law enforcement and judicial cooperation in criminal matters. These mechanisms, which include the European Arrest Warrant and the European Investigation Order, have proven to be highly effective in tackling serious and organised crime, and the Government is committed to their continued effective operation. The UK-EU Strategic Partnership also provides a framework for ongoing dialogue on these matters, including through regular meetings of the Specialised Committee on Law Enforcement and Judicial Cooperation. The Government is clear that cooperation in these areas is vital to protecting the security of the UK and Europe, and will continue to work closely with the EU and its Member States to deliver tangible results.
