The Government welcomes the Committee’s recognition of the changing media environment and the importance of the Government being able to effectively communicate policies to the public they serve. We recognise a balance must be struck between the constitutional role of our Sovereign Parliament in holding the Government to account and allowing it to scrutinise and debate policy, particularly the most important announcements of government policy, and ensuring that the elected government can inform the public of policy changes in the most timely and effective manner. 8. The Government acknowledges the Committee’s concerns about the Code as currently drafted, and will look to update the language.
