The non-statutory Developing school uniform policy guidance5 was updated on 7 November 2025. This update included new content to reflect commitments we made following the publication of the Women and Equalities Committee (WEC) 2024 report on Health barriers for girls and women in sport. The guidance sets out that schools should: • consider how comfortable a proposed uniform will be for pupils, including reference to some schools adopting active uniforms which allow pupils to move freely and promote physical activity throughout the day; • consider how the uniform policy might affect pupils, especially those who share protected characteristics; • actively engage with parents and pupils when designing a uniform policy or making any significant changes and take these views into account when determining the final policy; • ensure PE kit is practical, comfortable, suitable for the activity and affordable; and • consider how PE kit supports inclusion and participation for all pupils, for instance by giving pupils the ability to choose items in which they feel comfortable, and by promoting the importance of girls wearing sports bras.
