T Levels and the T Level Transition Programme are still relatively new programmes, and providers are still learning how to effectively deliver the programme and recruit students who are best prepared to move onto a T Level. There is evidence that providers are developing their approaches to the Transition Programme. Provisional data for 2021/22 shows that 30% of students progressed onto a T Level, up from 14% in 2020/21. Over two thirds of students on the Transition Programme (68%) progressed to a Level 3 qualification in 2021/22, an increase from 49% in 2020/21. In addition, 79% of students progressed to sustained education, employment or training in 2021/22, an increase from 69% in 2020/21. We are working with providers to better understand early progression outcomes and how more learners can be supported onto T Levels as the programme is rolled out more widely. This includes commissioning research on the Transition Programme which will provide a robust evidence base on the impact of the programme. The research will help us understand the range of approaches to the Transition Programme by providers and consider the extent to which the programme is equipping students with the knowledge and skills they need to progress. The research is expected to be published in late 2023 / early 2024. We will use the findings of this research to identify and share best practice and to consider if there are any changes that need to be made to the programme to ensure it effectively supports young people to progress onto a T Level.
