The decline in reading for pleasure is not simply an educational concern but has repercussions for the whole of society and should be a clear priority for the Government to address. Schools, early years settings, local authorities, the literary industry, parents and carers, the voluntary and community sector and others, play an essential role in making sure that every child has the opportunity to have access to reading for pleasure throughout their lives.
