Recommendation
The Department must act decisively and evaluate the benefits of the different programmes being undertaken, with a particular focus on supporting children from those groups least likely to read for pleasure. This should include looking at the benefits of book gifting schemes; reading volunteers in schools; and programmes supporting parents with shared reading in the early years. This evaluation should be completed within a year, and the Government should then move to scale what works nationally and with urgency as a lasting legacy of the National Year of Reading.
