Conclusion
Alongside its recently published guidance on screen use for the under-5s, the Department must update its guidance for parents of primary-aged children on supporting children to read and expand this to parents of children of all age groups. The guidance should clearly set out the benefits of reading for pleasure, why shared reading is beneficial for the youngest children, and provide strategies and support for parents to read with their children at home. This is a quick win for the DfE and should be completed by the end of the year. (Recommendation, Paragraph 70)
