The Department should introduce ongoing continuing professional development for primary and secondary school teachers on reading for pleasure and monitor take-up to ensure that as many teachers as possible are trained in best practice. As a first step, it should evaluate the effectiveness of the Transforming Schools Reading Culture programme on training teachers to promote reading for pleasure and roll it out across the country if it has been proven to be effective.
