Government inspectorates to assess quality and inter-agency effectiveness for child services

Recommendation

As part of their work, the government inspectorates should inspect both the quality of the services delivered, and also the effectiveness of the inter-agency arrangements for the provision of services to children and families.

Following the Laming Inquiry, the Children Act 2004 provided a framework for integrated children's services, and the Education and Inspections Act 2006 established the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills (Ofsted) as a unified inspectorate (legislation.gov.uk). Ofsted's remit, established over 15 years ago, includes inspecting the quality and effectiveness of services for children and young people, including inter-agency arrangements.
