Lambeth councillor safeguarding training

Recommendation

All Lambeth Council elected members should receive training on: (i) safeguarding and (ii) corporate parenting. Newly elected members should receive training on these matters as soon as possible following their election. Training should be mandatory and repeated on a regular basis. The training content should be regularly reviewed and updated.

Lambeth Council mandated by July 2021 that all elected members must complete safeguarding and corporate parenting training, providing a handbook to support their corporate parenting obligations. On 27 July 2021, Lambeth Council stated that all councillors are required to complete safeguarding training as well as training on corporate parenting. Councillors were provided with a handbook explaining the role of corporate parenting to help them fulfil their obligations. On 15 December 2021, Lambeth Council published an action plan. The Council stated that it would ensure that all newly elected councillors complete mandatory corporate parenting, safeguarding, and Equalities, Diversity and Inclusion training as part of their induction, and have refresher training each year for the duration of their term. The Council also stated that it would review mandatory training requirements for elected Members and the process for monitoring completion.
