Recommendation
The physical health and wellbeing of autistic people and people with learning disabilities requires greater prioritisation. We believe that the creation of an Intellectual Disability Physician to co-ordinate care in line with the model established in the Netherlands should be fully explored by the Department and NHS England & Improvement; and that this model would be a positive approach to addressing key problems facing autistic people and people with learning disabilities.
Government Response Summary
The government has looked into creating an Intellectual Disability Physician role but is concerned about potential negative effects, opting instead to focus on training all doctors to work with autistic people and those with learning disabilities.

HM Government Rejected
We agree. Government has looked into this. But we are worried this could have some bad effects within health care services. We would rather all doctors are able to work with people with a learning disability and autistic people. We have been working to create training for health care staff. The training will teach them about working with people with a learning disability and autistic people.
