Sectoral regulators face significant capacity challenges due to increasing prevalence of AI.

Conclusion
The increasing prevalence and general-purpose nature of AI will create challenges for the UK’s sectoral regulators, however expert they may be. The AI challenge can be summed up in a single word: capacity. Ofcom, for example, is combining implementation of a broad new suite of powers conferred on it by the Online Safety Act 2023, with formulating a comprehensive response to AI’s deployment across its wider remit. Others will be required to undertake resource-intensive investigations and it is vital that they are able, and empowered, to do so. All will be required to pay greater attention to the outputs of AI tools in their sectors, whilst paying due regard to existing innovation and growth-related objectives.
