The duty on local authorities to provide support and accommodation to children in need in their area, imposed by the Children Act 1989, extends to asylum-seeking children, and requires that children be provided with accommodation that suits their needs. Hotels must not be used to house unaccompanied asylum-seeking children, and we welcome the government’s commitment to not place children in such accommodation.
