We asked the Department how it was managing interdependencies with other transport plans and how it could ensure Northern Powerhouse Rail was integrated with local transport networks, if local transport decisions were left up to mayors. The Department told us it was working directly with individual local authorities and leaders on integration with local transport networks as well as local growth plans. It also highlighted the government’s Transport for City Regions funding of £15 billion over five years. It gave the example of Sheffield’s tram-train extension, for which the Department had provided additional capability and £7.5 million in funding to the South Yorkshire mayoral combined authority to develop the outline strategic case.62
