The Government agrees that, in order to maximise delivery of planned regeneration, we need to demonstrate that the activity and funding we are making into Barrow produces visible change. The Government is proud of the grants made to community organisations through the £5 million Social Impact Fund, to support services across mental health, disability, addiction, arts and culture, and skills services. The Barrow Work and Health Fund is also working to improve Barrow’s health outcomes and increase labour market participation, with a grant scheme launched to promote inclusive workplaces and help people back into work. Team Barrow’s flagship town centre regeneration programme, the ‘Heart of Barrow’, has been launched, with community consultation to inform both short-term ‘meanwhile plans’ and an ambitious long-term transformation plan. Team Barrow has also commissioned a dedicated programme of early deliverables to accelerate the visible impact of government investment in Barrow town centre. This includes installation of CCTV in response to residents’ feedback, a town centre deep clean, and repurposing of empty shops. In regards to education, the Government recently announced Blackpool and The Fylde College as a Defence Technical Excellence College. This will provide benefit to Barrow noting the upcoming merger with Furness College. Through the £5 million Brilliant Futures Fund, Team Barrow are working in partnership with local schools to invest in interventions aimed at increasing attainment and improving attendance. Our wider commitment to Barrow is also reflected in our investment at Grizebeck in the A595. Works are expected to complete this year, which will improve safety, journey times and resilience along one of Cumbria’s key transport routes. The Government notes that the Barrow Transformation Fund is intended to support transformational programmes. These are by their nature ambitious and take time to design and deliver. Team Barrow will continue to prioritise visible change and local engagement on its plans.
