PLANS ALREADY IN PLACE The UK has taken the positive step to join Erasmus+ from 2027 – the EU’s flagship education exchange and partnerships programme. This will open up world-class opportunities for learners, educators, young people and communities, while further strengthening our partnership with the European Union. The UK’s association to Erasmus+ forms one part of the May 2025 Common Understanding package agreed at the UK-EU-Summit last year. This package of agreements includes progress on negotiations to link Emission Trading Schemes and measures on food and drink. Together, these are estimated to add up to £9 billion a year to the UK economy by 2040, providing a significant boost to growth. Association to Erasmus+ delivers a strong package of strategic, economic, and social benefits for the UK. It supports the Government’s wider UKEU reset by helping to unlock progress across a broader set of shared priorities, while providing opportunities for over 100,000 participants annually through international mobility, partnerships and collaboration. The programme strengthens skills, employability and language capability across education and training, and enables institutions to access a programme that drives innovation. It also advances social mobility objectives, with a clear focus on widening access for disadvantaged groups and enhances UK soft power and global reputation through sustained peopletopeople links. Erasmus+ contributes to a more internationally connected, highly skilled workforce and supports longterm economic growth. We will continue to assess the UK’s participation in Erasmus+ at sector level as data becomes available. The UK-EU Specialised Committee on Participation in Union Programmes shall review the UK’s participation in Erasmus+ ten months after association. The committee minutes and findings are made publicly available and we expect the review of Erasmus+ to be published in early 2028.
