Many public and community libraries do innovative and effective outreach work to engage reluctant readers and bring more families into libraries, but too many children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, are still missing out on the benefits that libraries offer. The Summer 95 Reading Challenge is an important part of the story, but work must be done to ensure that it genuinely engages those children who do not already enjoy reading in order to have a truly transformational impact.
