Conclusion
Several witnesses stressed developing independence as an important part of home to school transport provision, while acknowledging that independent travel was not always suitable.73 The LGA told us that good practice for local authorities was not just about getting a young person from A to B but also about developing an independent person.74 We heard from ADEPT that travel experience from daily to and from school could help children to become independent and use public transport.75
